Overview
As Director of Software Engineering you own how Avok builds. You’ll set the technical direction for Avok Meridian and the Sentinel, Vector, Codex, and Atlas modules, grow a small senior team into a high-output organization, and keep delivery fast without compromising the security and auditability our customers require.
What you’ll do
- Set architecture and technical strategy for the Avok platform and its data-fusion and decision-support modules.
- Build, mentor, and scale a senior, accountable engineering team; set the hiring bar and the engineering culture.
- Own delivery across teams: roadmap, execution, quality, and release cadence.
- Make Avok secure and auditable by design — zero-trust, signed builds, and our accreditation posture (CPCSC, Protected B, ITSG-33).
- Partner with Mission Engineering, product, and leadership to turn real missions into shipped capability.
- Represent engineering with customers, primes, and partners when it counts.
What we’re looking for
- 10+ years building software, with 3+ years leading and growing engineering teams.
- Deep experience with data-intensive, distributed, or platform systems.
- A track record of shipping production software in security- or reliability-critical environments.
- Strong technical judgment and hands-on credibility — you still read and review code.
- Eligible for Canadian Government security clearance (Reliability / Secret or higher).
Nice to have
- Background in defence, intelligence, geospatial, or mission-critical systems.
- Experience with on-prem, air-gapped, or classified deployments.
- Prior early-stage, 0→1 team-building experience.
Why Avok
You’ll work on mission-driven technology that helps Canada see, understand, and decide — alongside a small, senior team, on problems that matter. This is an on-site role in Toronto. Many roles require eligibility for Canadian Government security clearance and compliance with the Controlled Goods Program.
